Sylvain Bongard nasceu em Genebra, na Suiça, em 1959. Em 1970 veio para Portugal. Estudou em Inglaterra de 1976 a 1978 e de 1978 a 1980 na Alemanha, em Bremen, continuando a desenvolver nos seus tempos livres desenhos e pinturas com um estilo próprio. Em 1980 regressa a Portugal. A partir de 1987, Sylvain decide iniciar a pintura em azulejo. Rapidamente apaixona-se por este material e dedica a maior parte do seu tempo a desenvolver um estilo próprio apoiado na aplicação de variadas técnicas, e produz uma série de quadros inovativos que decide expor na Fatacil em 1987. A partir desta data começa a viver da arte, produzindo em especial quadros cerâmicos mas também pinturas a óleo, acrílico, desenhos variados, pinturas murais, esculturas em barro etc.

O urso é na minha mente um animal extremamente poderoso, bem proporcionado e de algum modo “acomodado”; Fiquei satisfeito em me ser dada a tarefa de transformar este animal em uma pintura tridimensional. A intenção geral por trás do trabalho artístico neste urso é de esperança e optimismo, mostrando em seu lado mais colorido, a noite e o dia, acompanhados por duas pessoas – supostamente homem e mulher. Ambos estão contentes, com atitude relaxada e equilibrada, que é certamente o que a maioria de nós procura. A noite que é tão deliciosa quanto um dia ensolarado. Ambos são decorados ricamente com mosaicos de uma paleta de cores muito variadas e intensas. Por todo o urso, algumas peças de mosaico têm ouro e prata verdadeiros, que devem simbolizar uma vida sem problemas financeiros. O céu brilha com estrelas… uma delas transforma-se numa flor, liberando apenas perfumes deliciosos. O outro lado do urso mostra uma pessoa dormindo num momento de satisfação interna total. O azul é a cor que reina neste lado. Para mim, o azul é a paz, a calma, o mar e todas as águas. É a cor da esperança e de intenções genuínas. Não há nenhuma malícia no ar. Uma flor desabrocha para a vida entre o fundo cerâmico. O urso num esforço supremo tenta manter algum do branco do seu corpo, porque em minha mente, este é um urso polar… este é O Urso que se tornou tão famoso ultimamente, por ter que superar dificuldades monumentais, devido às mudanças drásticas no seu ambiente… um pouco como nós hoje em dia que temos que furar o nosso caminho pela crise. Mas este urso mostra delicadamente a sua língua contra a crise. É um urso com atitude… uma atitude positiva.

Sylvain Bongard was born in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1959. In 1970 he came to Portugal. He studied in England from 1976 to 1978 and from 1978 to 1980 in Bremen, Germany, continuing to develop in hiss free time drawings and painting with a unique style. In 1980 he returned to Portugal. In 1987, Sylvain decided to start painting on tile. Quickly became passionate by this material and devotes most of his time developing a style based on the application of various techniques, and produces a range of innovative paintings and decides to display them at the 1987 Fatacil. From this date he starts living from art, producing ceramic paintings in particular but also oil, acrylic, various drawings, murals, clay sculptures, etc.

The bear is in my mind an extremely powerful, well proportioned and somehow “cosy” animal; I was pleased to be given the task of transforming this animal into a three-dimensional painting. The general intention behind the art work on this bear is one of hope and optimism, showing on its more colourful side, the night and the day, coupled by two people – supposedly man and woman. Both are in contempt, relaxed, balanced attitude, which is certainly what most of us thrive for. The night being just as delightful as is a sunny day. Both are richly decorated with tile mosaics of a very varied and intense colour pallet. Throughout the bear, parcels of mosaics have real gold and silver, which should symbolise a life without financial problems. The sky is shining with stars... one of them transforming into a flower, releasing nothing but delightful scents. The other side of the bear shows a sleeping person in a moment of total inner satisfaction. Blue is the colour reigning on this side. For me, it’s blue for peace, calm, the sea and all waters. It’s the colour of hope and genuine intentions. There is no malice in the air. A flower has succeeded in coming to life amongst the ceramic background. The bear in a supreme effort tries to maintain some of it’s body white, because in my mind, this is a polar bear...this is THE bear which has become so famous, lately, for having to overcome monumental difficulties, due to drastic changes in it’s environment... a bit like us these days having to push our way through the crisis. But this bear gently draws his tongue against the crisis. It’s a bear with attitude… a positive attitude.
